YPF, Argentina's largest natural gas producer, plans to sign a preliminary final investment agreement with Italy’s Eni on June 6 for the installation of two FLNGs in Patagonia, Platts said. This will enable exports of 12m mtpa of LNG.
- FIDs are expected by the end of the year, with first LNG exports targeted in 2028 and 2029. Each FLNG will have a capacity of 6m mtpa, making them among the largest in the world.
- ENI is likely to export gas to Italy, while the third partner may ship it to its own home country.
- This is part of a broader plan to export 30m mtpa of LNG by 2031 in three phases. The project also involves BP-backed Pan American Energy and Shell.
- The developments will double Argentina’s gas production, requiring 800 new YPF wells in Vaca Muerta. By 2030, the region is expected to produce 250 mcm/d, creating a significant export surplus.
