The US Energy Department has approved permits for Sempra Energy to send US natural gas to Mexico for re-export from LNG terminals. It cited emissions reductions from shorter shipping routes to Asia as a key driver for the decision.
- The permits allow Sempra to ship natural gas via pipeline to western Mexico to be converted to LNG at the company's terminals and sent to consumers in Asia and other markets.
- The LNG will be exported from Sempra terminals Energy Costa Azul due for completion mid-2025 and Vista Pacifico which has not started production yet.
- The permits will allow Costa Azul to export 475 billion cubic feet per year of gas and 200 bcf from Vista Pacifico.
