UK: Junior Min & Streeting Ally Resigns, Calls For PM To Go

May-12 15:31

Pippa Crerar at the Guardian posts on X: "Zubir Ahmed, health minister and another close ally of Wes Streeting, quits calling for Keir Starmer to step aside. Feels like the Streeting bid could be on." Situation remains very fluid, with little sign of whether anyone will launch a formal campaign against Starmer in the immediate term. Ahmed comes as the fourth junior ministerial resignation after Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips, Victims MinisterAlex Davies-Jones, and Communities Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh earlier today.

  • Over 100 Labour backbenchers and parliamentary private secretaries have signed a letter backing Starmer, reportedly at their own behest rather than in a No.10 organised campaign. Comes with over 80 MPs having called for his resignation, leaving around 200 MPs still to publicly declare either way.
