Ukraine’s Naftogaz has issued a demand to the German government to either halt or severely curtail gas flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline
- "With Naftogaz we sent an appeal to the German economy ministry and the German regulator on the suspension of Nord Stream 1," the head of Naftogaz Serhiy Makogon told national television.
- Ukraine want Nord Stream 1 flows halted to push more Europe-bound gas through Ukraine, helping with transit fees to pay for war efforts and to deter Russia from damaging the pipeline.
- Germany has already halted the Nord Stream 2 pipeline but doing so with Nord Stream 1 seems unlikely given its dependence on Russian gas and fears of damaging its supply security. As it stands, Germany is more focussed on getting an EU oil ban against Russia over the line which is still being held up by Hungary.
