President Donald Trump on Thursday attacked Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not doing enough to fortify the economy as the effects of tariffs take hold, but stopped short of saying that he currently intends to fire the central banker.

"If I ask him to, he'll be out of there," Trump said in a Oval Office press event at the White House. "I don't think he's doing the job. He's too late, always too late. A little slow. And I'm not happy with him. I let him know it and if I want him out he'll be out of there real fast, believe me." (See: MNI INTERVIEW: Fed Needs More Hawkish Message - Emmons)
