IRAN: France: E3 Countries Want To Reopen Door Of Diplomacy

Nov-20 14:02

Reuters reports comments from a spox for the French Foreign Ministry claiming that the E3 nations (France, Germany, the UK) 'want to reopen the door of diplomacy over Iran's nuclear programme'. Comes after Iran reacted angrily to the passage of a resolution from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s Board of Governors earlier today (see IRAN: IAEA Res. Calls For Update On Enriched Uranium & Bombed Nuclear Sites) that demanded Tehran inform the UN organisation regarding the status of its enriched uranium stockpile and the nuclear sites damaged in the 12-Day War.

  • After the passage of the resolution, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted on X that the US and E3 are "invalidating [the IAEA] and its independence and disrupting the process of interactions and cooperation between the Agency and Iran,", adding that his department had formally confirmed the termination of the Cairo Agreement, announced in September, which would have seen the IAEA resume nuclear inspections.
  • On 18 Nov, in a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House, US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran is "very much" signalling that it wants to negotiate a nuclear deal with the US regarding its nuclear programme.
  • Kamal Kharrazi, foreign policy adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told CNN on the same day that any talks must be conducted "on equal footing and mutual respect,”
