LNG: Everett Terminal in Boston May Receive First Cargo Since March

LNG Market Analyst Alex Froley reports the Seapeak Catalunya is anchored near Boston with a cargo from Trinidad. The 5.1mtpa Everett Terminal has not received a cargo since March 19 but did receive six between December 2023 and March 2024.

• The Everett facility, owned by Constellation Energy, connects to two interstate pipelines in addition to a local gas utility’s distribution system. The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) had reported the facility might cease operations in 2024 due to economic factors. However, the incoming cargo suggest that is not the case and EIA reported the terminal will remain open through the 2029-30 winter.
• The US imports less than an average 0.1bcf/d of LNG per year, with almost all delivered to New England between November and March. In 2023, all of the 13.3bcf of LNG imports to New England went to the Everett terminal. Another terminal that can supply New England, Northeast Gateway, last received cargoes in the winter of 2021-22 with two cargoes of almost 3bcf.
