TURKEY: Entry of Erdogan's Son Into Politics Now Under Consideration: BBG

Feb-10 13:08

"RISING PROFILE OF ERDOGAN’S SON FUELS TURKEY SUCCESSION TALKS" - BBG

  • More from the Bloomberg piece: "The transition of power has become a frequent discussion topic behind closed doors among the governing AK Party’s ranks in Ankara, according to people familiar with the deliberations. Bilal’s entry into politics is now under consideration, with a view to his potentially becoming leader, said the people, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive issue."
  • But the story also notes "Bilal, 44, has denied having immediate political ambitions. It’s also early days in any possible succession planning, which also could land badly with voters."
  • Erdogan is limited to serving a final, full presidential term until 2028, but he would be eligible to run for the post again if the parliament calls an early election before the end of his current term, or if the constitution is amended to enable him to stand again.

Prices bounced again Thursday, supported by strength in global bond markets and a smoother inflation picture at the December CPI print. As such, prices edged further away from recent lows. Nonetheless, slower pricing for additional RBA easing - and partial pricing for a return to rate hikes in 2026 - should keep the front-end of the curve under pressure. This keeps prices well below prior resistance at 96.615, the Sep 12 high, and refocuses attention on 95.480 as the next major support.
