IRAN: Iran And US Could Resume Peace Talks As Soon As Next Week - WSJ

May-06 15:11

The Wall Street Journal is the latest outlet to report that, “Iran and the U.S. are working with mediators to hammer out a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding that would lay out a framework for a monthlong period of talks to end the war, people familiar with the matter said.”

  • WSJ reports, The discussion points would be the focus of talks that could resume as early as next week in Islamabad, they said. Iran has expressed openness to discussing its nuclear program, easing its earlier resistance, the people added.
  • “Details around the length of any suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment or the possible removal of enriched uranium from the country, along with Iran’s assertion of a permanent role in overseeing the Strait of Hormuz, remain unresolved and are expected to complicate any eventual talks, some of the people said. Other issues that could snarl talks include the timing and extent of any sanctions relief.
  • “The one-month period for talks could be extended by mutual agreement if progress is being made. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Iran was reviewing the U.S. proposal, and after finalizing its assessment would convey its views to the Pakistani mediators.”
  • A short time ago, Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told the London-based, Qatari-owned newspaper "Al-Araby Al-Jadeed" that there is positive progress in the message exchanges between the US and Iran and emphasized that there is a high chance of finding a diplomatic solution, per Roi Kais at KAN.
