CANADA: CAD Fairs Well Considering Trade Data

- USDCAD cleared 1.33 following the large ADP beat in a move mostly sustained after claims and a hawkish Logan.
- However, the nature of USD strength post-ADP has meant that CAD is joined near the bottom of the G10 FX pack rather than its standalone position prior to the data.
- That’s despite a significant deterioration in Canada’s external balance, with a goods deficit of C$3.44B (cons surplus $1.2B) after a downward revised surplus of C$0.9B (initial C$1.9B).
- Currently 1.3309 off a high of 1.3329, USDCAD stopped short of important resistance at the 50-day EMA of 1.3362. $651m of expiry at 1.3350 at the upcoming NY cut but it lands with ISM Services/JOLTS.
