FOREX: USDJPY Fully Erases Payrolls Dip

Aug-10 09:42
  • Yen underperformance vs. G10 peers comes despite a hawkish sounding summary of the BoJ’s July meeting, as higher energy prices provide some headwinds for the JPY.
  • A reminder that Governor Ueda's post-meeting press conference had already provided some hawkish takeaways in July. Today’s summary revealed that many BoJ board members voiced concern over upside risks to prices and said the Bank needed to raise its policy interest rate further. One member suggested that the pace of hikes could be faster than market expectations.
  • USDJPY has cleared Friday's 158.54 high and the 158.58 38.2% retracement of the Jul 23-Aug 3 bear leg, fully erasing Friday's NFP-driven dip to 156.68. This increases scope for a recovery towards 159.61, the 50.0% retracement of the aforementioned bear leg.
  • The US dollar index remains close to Friday's 99.403 lows, which represents the lowest level seen since the June FOMC.
  • Market-implied odds of a September Fed hike have faded to a little under 50/50, with Friday's payrolls report adding to a dovish move stemming from Middle East de-escalation hopes. U.S. inflation updates loom large this week.
  • Elsewhere, Iran & Iran are seemingly nearing a deal surrounding the transit of the Strait of Hormuz. While a more durable solution to the U.S.-Iran conflict would likely prove USD-negative, Iran alluding to the imposition of fees for maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz limits the chances of any such agreement being struck.
  • Decelerations in food and goods inflation offset a rebound in services in Norwegian inflation data for July, leaving the CPI-ATE measure steady and below analyst consensus. This adds weight to the consensus call for a Norges Bank hold on Thursday, with focus set to remain on guidance re: future monetary policy moves. NOKSEK is marginally lower as a result, with the cross still hovering just above the 50-day EMA, which intersects at 0.9961.
  • Fed's Hammack is the sole speaker on today's schedule, while there is no notable data due during the remainder of the session.
