FED: Warsh Asked on the SEP

Sep-16 18:57
  • Asked about how he squares the SEP's projection of the 2% target only being reached by 2029, Warsh says "one easy way to square that is, those aren't my forecasts". He adds "today's action starts to show we're serious about this, and we will deliver on the price stability objective...when we continue our discussions over the course of the next several weeks and months, we'll have more to say about it. But I'm ill prepared to prejudge those future actions."
  • Warsh says "we care very much" about AI developments but he basically defers to the relevant task force.

FED: Warsh on Why he Thinks Long-End Treasury Yields Are Rising

Sep-16 18:56
  • Warsh comments on why he thinks long-end Treasury yields are on the rise. He gives three reasons:
  • "First is economic strength...Second reason: competition for capital. The surge in capital expenditures, which I referenced in my remarks, is real, and the so-called hyperscalers are out in the market raising funding, and so the competition for capital is real, and I think it partly explains the increase in yields...The third is geopolitics. The situation in hotspots around the world are driving long-term yields" including crack spreads.

FED: Warsh Says US Economy is Running at Full Employment

Sep-16 18:51
  • Warsh defines the "least well off" Americans as "people that don't own financial assets. Call that a bit less than 50% of the country. They don't have equity in their home. They don't have equity in a 401k plan, so they're living off their paycheck that comes every couple of weeks." Warsh says that the economy is running at full employment.
  • Asked about the ECB's two hikes this year but not in consecutive meetings, Warsh says he won't comment on their decisions but notes that most advanced economies are "suffering from price pressures too".
