MEXICO: President Sheinbaum Cites Significant Progress on Domestic Security

  • President Sheinbaum, mentioning the recent discussions between US & Mex administrations in her morning press briefing, said that her government had made significant progress cracking down on cartels, citing a steep drop in the homicide rate, much lower fentanyl seizures by U.S. authorities at the border and sparse migration. She noted it was a joint effort with the U.S.
  • Asa reminder, news overnight revealed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken with Mexico’s Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to discuss cooperation between the two countries on security matters.
  • Both agreed to follow up on bilateral initiatives to strengthen information sharing and cross border security cooperation. A US-Mex security group is set to meet on Jan 23, and a security ministerial meeting will now be held in Washington next month.

Bessent echoing his stance although this time following Politico late yesterday citing three people familiar with the matter that Trump officials have raised doubts about Hassett. Despite those latest reports, Hassett's probability of becoming next Fed chair is higher on the day at 55%. Waller (23%) has overtaken Warsh (18%, down from almost 50% at one point in the last two days) with the two seemingly vying for the role if Trump wants to go down the route of choosing a previous Fed Governor.
