- President Petro declared a state of national disaster on Thursday and has asked for international help to combat raging wildfires that have spread through drought-stricken forests. The fires are expected to worsen in coming days due to conditions associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon.
- Air quality in the country’s capital has reportedly worsened, leading local authorities to take measures such as additional restrictions on the use of private vehicles. The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies, Ideam, said that climate forecasts indicate that February will be the month with the least rain in the first quarter of 2024.
- Separately, and as mentioned yesterday, a report was released suggesting investors and regulators in Colombia are rushing to prop up their shrinking stock exchange to prevent it from losing its status as an emerging market.
