Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. Modi says that the two have "been in constant thought with regards to the Russia-Ukraine conflict", and tells Putin that India "believes conflicts should be resolved peacefully". Modi says that "India stands ready to play whatever role is required for peace", and that "We have got another opportunity to discuss these issues today". Putin calls Russia-India relations a "strategic partnership".

  • India's Modi is seen as one of the potential bridges in the conflict, with Ukraine's NATO allies deemed as effective participants in the war by Moscow, while China's increasingly close 'no limits partnership' with Russia means that Kyiv is wary of any peace plan put forward by Beijing.
  • India on the other hand has straddled both camps. It has become a major purchaser of Russian oil and supplier of restricted tech in the wake of Western sanctions, but Modi has also with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and New Delhi has not backed Brazilian or Chinese peace plans that raise the prospect of Ukraine ceding territory to Russia.
