MEXICO: Morena Party Set For Gubernatorial Election Victory

- Mexico’s ruling party is set to win a gubernatorial election in the country’s most populous state, ending almost a century of one-party rule in the region and giving momentum to its bid to retain the presidency.
- The candidate of President AMLO’s Morena party, school teacher and former education minister Delfina Gómez, garnered between 52.1% and 54.2% of the votes. She will be the first female governor of the State of Mexico which has essentially been controlled by the PRI for over nine decades.
- “Looking forward to the presidential succession, Morena can now claim to have defeated the longest-lasting PRI elite,” said Juan Carlos Villarreal, a political science professor in Toluca, the state capital. “It has a symbolic value for Morena and for the people who voted.”
- It is worth noting that voters also cast ballots on Sunday for the governorship in the less-populated Coahuila State where the PRI may have a better chance of fending off challengers.
