The fallout from Former President Donald Trump's decision to dine with white nationalist Nick Fuentes has done little to damage his popularity amongst his core base.

  • According to FiveThirtyEight, Trumps favourability remains around 40%, where it has been since early summer.
  • The Fuentes scandal has, however, increased animosity between Trump and the Republican establishment. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are the latest high-profile Republicans to speak out against Trump.
  • McConnell: "There is no room in the Republican Party for antisemitism or white supremacy, and anyone meeting with people advocating that point of view, in my judgment, are highly unlikely to ever be elected president of the United States."
  • McCarthy said at a press conference yesterday: "I don't think anybody should be spending any time with Nick Fuentes. He has no place in this Republican Party."
  • Betting markets see Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) as close to equal implied probability of taking the Republican nomination for 2024 although the later is yet to formally declare his intention to run.
