Prime Minister Michel Barnier has formally confirmed that the Social Security Finance Bill (PLFSS) will be forced through without a vote in the National Assembly, utilising the provisions of Article 49.3 of the French Constitution. Barnier said "it's the moment of truth", saying the public would not forgive those deputies 'favouring personal interests over the future of the nation'.

  • In response, Mathilde Panot, president of the far-left La France Insoumise (France Unbowed, LFI) group in parliament, confirmed that the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) alliance would put forward a censure motion against the Barnier gov't utilising the stipulations of the Article 49.3 that provides for such a vote to be moved within 24 hours. Panot: "Faced with this umpteenth denial of democracy, we will censure the government. Michel Barnier will go down in history as the [PM] who had the shortest term. [...] We are experiencing political chaos because of Michel Barnier's government and Emmanuel Macron's presidency,"
  • The actions of the far-right Rassemblement National (National Rally, RN) will be crucial come the likely censure motion. The NFP on its own has 192 seats to the Barnier gov'ts 211. If it abstains the gov't may be able to survive depending on the actions of the Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories bloc (23 seats). However, if RN and its allies (total 141 seats) vote against Barnier then the gov't falls.
