UKRAINE: Zelenskyy Convenes 'Coalition Of The Willing' Leaders Summit For 10 May

May-09 13:58

Speaking virtually to the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) meeting in Oslo, Norway, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that there will be a summit of leaders from the 'Coalition of the Willing' tomorrow (Saturday, 10 May) in Kyiv. The JEF is a UK-founded group of 10 northern European countries (UK, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland) established in 2014 as a 'complement' to NATO.

  • The 'Coalition of the Willing' is a broader group of 31 states, led jointly by the UK and France, that have pledged greater support to Ukraine than that agreed as part of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, and have committed to contributing to a peacekeeping force to go to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire (either by directly sending troops, financing the programme, or contributing military equipment).
  • The coalition's peace plan, as envisaged by UK PM Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, mirrors that put forward by US President Donald Trump in calling for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia. It also looks to set out a 'lasting framework' for peace, and raising military aid for Kyiv.
