GBP: GBPUSD Resilience Showing Bullish Signs, 1.3509 Remains Key Resistance

- GBPUSD has been consolidating above the 1.34 handle as the softer dollar and buoyant risk profile is supportive at the margins. The market is awaiting a bumper week of event risk in the UK, which includes CPI and labour market data, the BOE and the Makerfield By-Election. This could test the well-defined short-term technical parameters for cable.
- Today’s piercing of the 50-day EMA signals scope for a stronger recovery towards 1.3509, the May 26 high and a bull trigger. Clearance of this level would highlight a stronger reversal. On the downside, key short-term support has been defined at 1.3303, the May 18 low. A breach of this level would be a bearish development.
- For EURGBP, there remains a lot of focus on the key support at 0.8610, the Mar 16 low. Clearance of this level would highlight an important medium-term bearish breakout.
- An Andy Burnham victory in Makerfield this week would allow him to challenge Starmer for the PM job, something that Burnham has been very transparent about. Burnham is seen further to the left of the party (in contrast to the more centrist Starmer) and hence markets would expect more left-wing fiscal policy.
