EMISSIONS: Verbund Emissions Rise by 4% Amid Scope 1 Surge

Verbund’s total emissions increased to 5mn tonnes CO2e in 2024, up 4% year-on-year, driven primarily by a 71% surge in Scope 1 emissions, according to its latest annual report.

• Emissions from thermal power plants, covered by the EU ETS, totalled 479k tonnes CO2e. Free allocations accounted for 2% of its total surrender obligation, amounting to 11k tonnes CO2e.
• Scope 1 emissions where its EU ETS exposure lies, rose to 500k tonnes CO2e, up 71% from 292k tonnes CO2e the previous year.
• The emissions increase was driven by higher emissions intensity, rising from 8g CO2e/kWh in the prior year to 13g CO2e/kWh in 2024.
• Verbund targets a 74% emissions reduction by 2030, at least 90% by 2040, and net-zero by 2050, in line with EU climate goals.
