LNG: Turkey’s LNG Imports Surge: Platts

Feb-12 17:38

Turkey is experiencing record LNG imports to replace weak pipeline flows amid strong demand, Platts said.

  • Turkey imported 2.15m mt of LNG in January, a 45% year-on-year increase. This made it the largest European LNG importer.
  • The US supplied 61% of these volumes.
  • Imports continued to rise in February, with 721k mt already received and another 340k mt en route, Platts added.
  • Strong seasonal demand and cold winters have driven up gas demand, with natural gas system volumes averaging around 249.32 mcm/d in January.
  • Maintenance at Greece’s LNG terminal and the Shah Deniz gas field has also increased reliance on LNG.
  • Turkish authorities plan more LNG cargoes to support their ambition of becoming a natural gas hub for Europe.
  • Furthermore, Russian gas flows via the TurkStream pipeline to Bulgaria hit a new high in January.
  • Weak Pacific demand and high Atlantic basin gas prices have made Europe a preferred LNG destination.
  • The East Mediterranean marker for February delivery averaged $13.851/MMBtu.
