NATO: Trump Touts NATO Defence Spending Progress, Defends Handling Of Iran War

Jul-08 16:34

US President Donald Trump is speaking at a press conference to conclude the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey. Trump says on Iran: "They have a small percentage of missiles left..." He reiterates that the Iranian military has been defeated and doesn't expand on earlier threats to strike Iran again.

  • In response to a later press question on why he is struggling to end the Iran war, Trump says: "The Iran war has been a tremendous military success." He suggests that Iran's nuclear programme is neutralised by damage sustained in the 12-Day War in 2025. He adds that Iran "wants to make a deal but [doesn't] know how to make a deal."
  • On NATO defence spending, Trump says: "Most of the countries (in NATO) have agreed" to increasing defence spending from 2% to 5% of GDP. Trump says everyone was a "great team player" during the summit. He singles out one country (likely Spain) as a member that expressed new openness to hiking spending during the leaders' confab. He adds that countries are making "great progress".
  • He notes that much of the increased European defence spending is going to US companies and says he urged US defence firms to build new plants to ramp up production of critical munitions.
  • Trump says that Lockheed Martin will establish a "world-class Patriot missile sustainment facility" in Europe. He says Lockheed and German defence firm Rheinmetall will partner to build ATACMS in Europe.
