MNI BRIEF: China FDI Drop Widens In May

Foreign direct investment in China hit CNY358.1 billion from January to May, down 13.2% y/y, widening from the 10.9% y/y drop during the first four months, the Ministry of Commerce announced on Friday

Investment from ASEAN countries increased by 20.5%, while Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Germany increased by 70.2%, 60.9%, 10.3%, and 7.1%.

The framework reached during China-U.S. talks in London could pave the way for a trade deal by mid-August, potentially including Chinese purchases of U.S. Treasury bonds, Chinese former officials recently told MNI. (See MNI: China Advisors Hopeful Of US Trade Deal)
