MNI BRIEF: China and Canada Commit To Deepen Trade Cooperation

China and Canada will enhance economy, trade and energy cooperation, whilst reactivating the Sino-Canadian Joint Agricultural Committee to strengthen agricultural cooperation and food security, according to a statement on CCTV on Friday following Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to China. 

Both sides are committed to expanding bilateral trade, increasing two-way investment, and providing a fair and open business environment for enterprises from the two countries, the statement said, noting they will boost cooperation in traditional energy resources such as oil and natural gas, launch a ministerial-level energy dialogue to support investment and trade in both clean and traditional energy, and strengthen cooperation in natural uranium trade.

The two sides decided to restart the high-level Sino-Canadian Economic and Financial Strategic Dialogue, establish a Sino-Canadian Financial Working Group, and further cooperate in the RMB/CAD bilateral currency swap arrangement.  They also agreed to continue the annual meeting mechanism of the Sino-Canadian Law Enforcement Cooperation Working Group, with the anti-drug dialogue as a key component.（See MNI: More China-US Tensions Likely Despite Progress-Advisors）
