NZD: Bullish NZD Narrative Persists Following Q2 CPI Data

- New Zealand’s consumer price index rose 1.5% q/q in Q2, up from 0.9% in Q1, lifting annual inflation to 4.1% from 3.1%, above the RBNZ’s July forecast of 3.9%. While contained core inflation could allow the RBNZ to pause before year-end, short-term expectations for further tightening are keeping the bullish NZD narrative intact.
- For NZDUSD, fresh six-week highs of 0.5873 overnight have helped the Kiwi cement its position as the best performing G10 currency in June, currently up 3.2%. Offsetting optimism for the greenback means that NZDUSD remains well off the recent extremes, with strong resistance seen just ahead of 0.60. The crosses, however, screen a lot more interesting on the charts.
- Specifically, NZDJPY has matched the year’s best levels this morning, supported by a relatively stable risk backdrop. Session highs were printed at 95.43, a break of this level would place the cross at the highest level since July 2024.
- EURNZD has notably fallen to the lowest level since August 2025, and a sustained break of 1.9450 would bolster the bearish narrative substantially. Downside targets for EURNZD would then include 1.9374 (1.000 projection of the Apr 7 - May 29 -Jun 29 price swing) and 1.9284 (Low Jul 31, 2025). Further out, a key medium-term support is located at 1.8866 – a trendline drawn from the Apr 2022 low.
