POLITICAL RISK: China Urges EU Caution Over 'Words & Deeds" On South China Sea

Jul-14 07:43

(MNI) London - Reuters reports comments from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the joint statements commemorating a 2016 ruling from a tribunal established in The Hague under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, rejecting China's expansive claims in the South China Sea. MoFA says it has "lodged solemn representations with the relevant countries". Says it "urges the European side to be cautious in words and deeds", and that it should stop endorsing the "illegal ruling" to prevent an impact on China-EU ties.

  • Over the weekend, 14 countries, including the US, Japan, Canada, Australia, the Philippines and the UK, released a statement rejecting any “destabilising” actions in the disputed waters, claiming they threatened regional stability. The EU issued its own statement, saying it "is deeply concerned by the steady increase of tensions and dangerous incidents in the South China Sea and firmly opposes any unilateral actions that threaten to undermine regional stability and the international order based on international law and the rule of law."
  • The MoFA claims, "The so-called award is nothing but a piece of waste paper that is illegal, null and void, and has no binding force".
  • The status of EU-China relations remains in flux. Some, such as Spain, favour cooperation and avoiding escalation, while hawks such as France (and increasingly Germany) warn of Chinese industrial 'overcapacity' damaging EU industry. Statements such as the one on the UNCLOS ruling could further damage ties.
