The People’s Bank of China may shift toward using overnight reverse repos as a key policy tool following recent liquidity operations, according to Securities Daily reports. August Westpac consumer confidence jumped 6% m/m to 88.9, which is still in pessimistic territory but the highest reading since March. The second consecutive RBA policy hold provided support, as the gain was predominantly among mortgagees, even though retail fuel prices are sharply higher. Despite ongoing household pessimism, private consumption has been solid especially of discretionary items. Westpac believes the RBA will continue to pause in September as there is limited inflation data before then.

The BBDXY range overnight was 1197.34-1200.79, Asia is currently trading around 1199, -0.05%. The US Dollar is trading heavily toward its recent lows. The headwinds for the broader US Dollar seem to be mounting and the market is attempting to challenge the pivotal 1195-1200 area. For now it continues to hold as the move in Oil and the long-end of the US rates market provide it with some support. I have been skewed toward fading this dip, looking for a retest of the pivotal 1230-1235 area at some point. So I will be watching closely to see how this recent clean out of longs continues to unfold. The wind has been taken out the bullish USD sails for now, and I am looking for some consolidation as the market tries to find its footing again. Strong support comes in around 1195-1200 but a sustained break back below 1195 and we could see the downtrend reassert itself and the probability of a bounce back toward 1230 becomes greatly reduced.
