AMERICAS OIL: Canadian Oil Refinery Shut Down Could Impact Northeast US Supply

Canadian Oil Refinery Shut Down Could Impact Northeast US Supply
• Canada’s largest oil refinery, Irving Oil’s 3000,000 bpd Saint John facility, is planning to shut down for maintenance in the fall, potentially exacerbating fuel market tightness in northeastern US states that rely on the plant for gasoline and diesel imports.
• The plant on the east coast of Canada is planning to undergo a turnaround from early September to mid November, according to the company’s website. Irving did not immediately respond to questions from Bloomberg about what units are being worked on or whether the plant has made alternate supply arrangements for customers.
• Irving regularly conducts fall maintenance at the plant, undergoing a 30-day fall turnaround in 2025, including upgrades to a gasoline-making unit, and a five-week turnaround during the same period in 2024.
• Saint John also supplies heating oil to states in the Northeast for home heating in winter months. Heating oil stocks tend to fall and prices spike in the colder months as more of the fuel is consumed. Maine, Massachusetts and other northeastern states import gasoline and diesel supplies from the plant.
• MNI reported a 30-day turnaround last September Access Full Report Here

Resistance to watch in GBPUSD is around the 50-day EMA, at 1.3441. It has been pierced. A clear break of it would signal scope for a continuation higher towards 1.3509, the May 26 high and a bull trigger. Clearance of this hurdle would highlight a stronger reversal. For now trend signals remain bearish. Key short-term support is 1.3303, the May 18 low. Clearance of this level would be a bearish development.
